Abortion - Young Pregnant & Parenting

How to have an abortion in Victoria
In Victoria it is legal to perform an abortion if the doctor believes that the pregnancy would put a woman's health or emotional well being at risk.

If an abortion is done in a public hospital and the woman has a Health Care Card, Medicare should pay for all costs - but there may be a waiting list. Public hospitals often charge a bed fee, which can sometimes be negotiated. If the abortion is performed in a private clinic, the doctor may bulk-bill to Medicare, but there could be costs on top the Medicare charge.

Age should not stop you from seeking an abortion and your privacy should be respected at all times.

If you choose to have an abortion, it is best have it in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. But it is possible later. The risks and complications following an abortion are small if a competent doctor does the abortion and if you follow the doctor's instructions after the abortion. If the pregnancy is more than 12 weeks, the risk of complications increases.

If you get a strong fever, or strong pain or heavy or long bleeding after an abortion you should immediately go to a doctor.

If you're seeking an abortion you can see a counsellor first. You can take a partner, friend or relative if you feel like you need support. The counsellor will explain what happens and tell you about any possible risks and what sort of anaesthetic is most suitable. The counsellor will want to discuss with you what sort of contraception options are available after the abortion. You may also want to discuss your feelings about the pregnancy.

A vaginal, or internal, examination or ultrasound assessment may also be necessary to find out more about the pregnancy, and a blood test will done.

There are a number of organisations that provide advice and support to young women who are thinking about abortion. These agencies will discuss all alternatives available and will accept the choices a pregnant woman makes. They are also available if you need to talk with someone after an abortion.

Not every place will refer young women to abortion services- it is important to check this with whoever you speak with.
