your rights as a student - Young Pregnant & Parenting

Staying at school

Pregnancy or being a parent should not exclude a young woman from continuing her education. In Victoria, under the Victorian Equal Opportunity Act 1995, students who are pregnant have the rights to stay at school. After the 34th week of pregnancy, a doctor needs to find out if the young woman is well enough to get to school.

You can ask principals, student welfare coordinators, school counsellors or other school staff for information about staying at school, it is important to find out if they can keep your information confidential, and if you want them to do that.

There are different options for pregnant young women and young parents who want to stay at school or train for a job. To get further information contact your local Centrelink office.
