Why are there foods that pregnant women have to avoid?
There are infections that you can get from food that are pretty rare but if you get them they are very, very harmful for babies. Listeria and Toxoplasmosis can be avoided if you do the following:
- wash your hands and utensils when you are preparing food
- store food well, refrigerate cold food and when you are cooking or reheating food make sure you do it to boiling point
- use cooked food within 12 hours
- try not to eat - soft cheese (like brie, camembert or ricotta), pate, uncooked or smoked seafood, cold cooked meat, undercooked or raw meat and eggs and salads that might not have been freshly prepared (it's ok to make your own)
- wash your salad vegies well
- avoid contact with cat poo and wash your hands after handling pets or gardening.
