eating well is always important - Young Pregnant & Parenting

Eating well is always important

Eating well is always important. When you are pregnant or breastfeeding it is even more important to look after your own health so you can give your baby the best possible start in life.

During pregnancy and while you are breastfeeding your body needs more energy and nutrients like protein, calcium, iron and vitamins. This doesn't mean you have to eat for two. What you eat is more important than how much you eat.

Foods to eat everyday (if you can)
  • Fruit and vegetables - fresh, frozen, cooked or in salads
  • Breads or cereals - like bread, breakfast, cereals, pasta, couscous, rice and other grains
  • Dairy foods - like milk, cheese and yoghurt
  • Meat or legumes - like meat, fish, chicken, eggs or beans and nuts.

Where to go

Nutrition and Dietetics Department, The Royal Women's Hospital
Australian Nutrition Foundation
  • Local community health centre
