Refuges
Refuges are places where you can go in an emergency.

There are two types of refuges - youth refuges and women's refuges. Some youth refuges take children, others don't. You may have to share a bedroom with another woman and there may be house rules that you will have to agree to accept. There are also youth refuges for young women only. Women's refuges only take women who are leaving violence in the home. That doesn't have to be hitting or hurting, it can just mean that you feel scared. In women's refuges every woman gets her own room and there is usually a child support worker. The rules around safety are fairly strict.

If you are in a refeuge and you want to complain about it you call call 1800 066 256.

Refuges can be found through the housing support groups listed in the links and resources section.

Emergency housing
Emergency housing is housing support for a short period of time (usually six weeks) in a house or flat. To find an emergency housing service in the area where you want to go to, ring WIRE
on 9654 6844.
