Finding out you are pregnant

If you've just found out you are pregnant you are likely to be having a wide range of emotions. Pregnancy can be a wonderful thing. It can also be a time of confusion and anxiety, so it a good idea to know, as early as possible, what sort of help and advice is available.

If you talk to a counsellor, a nurse or a doctor you can find out about all of your choices. Even if you feel certain about what you want to do, talking to someone else can help you to think about things that you might not have thought about before. The choices a counsellor can discuss with you are:

- Deciding to go ahead with the pregnancy and keeping the baby,
|
- Deciding to go ahead with the pregnancy and having the baby adopted.
|

Before you go to a counsellor remember the following:

- Pregnancy counsellors should not make judgements and all discussions and decisions should be private.
|
- Pregnancy counselling should include information about all the options and support services available.
|
- Some agencies that say they provide pregnancy counselling services may have religious or political opinions and try to push their beliefs on to people.
