Paternity
Before a child is registered, and if you are unsure about whether the father's name should be on the birth certificate you should see advice about the legal and financial implications.
If the father is on the certificate he has to pay maintenance for the child:
- If you are separated and the child lives with you, and
- If he earns money (this can be a very long commitment)
He also has the right to see and have influence over the child.
Both parents have the same legal rights and responsibilities over the baby whether you are married or not.
